The Sweet Spot
“The Sweet Spot”
12-in X 16-in
acrylic on canvas panel
Nov. 2024
Capturing an iconic architectural landmark of Chattanooga, Tennessee, this original acrylic and mixed-media painting frames the storied Market Street (Chief John Ross) Bridge in a vibrant, expressive landscape. Anchoring the foreground is a classic dark-green riverfront streetlamp, rendered with rich impasto texture that sets an intimate, tactile vantage point overlooking the Tennessee River. I can be found, from time to time, underneath this bridge - in “the sweet spot” - casting and reeling… and occasionally catching a bass.
Through the sweeping, massive concrete arches of the bridge, the view opens up to a sunlit panorama of the riverfront, featuring boat docks, shoreline buildings, and lush hillside foliage. Bold graphic contour lines sculpt the balustrades, light pylons, and concrete stonework, balanced by deep ultramarine waters and pointillist clusters of yellow riverbank blossoms. The dynamic play between heavy architectural structure and textured, atmospheric sky work pays homage to the historic beauty and enduring spirit of scenic Chattanooga.
